SHORT STORY: CHANGE II – THE SCAR

As I held my newborn baby in my arms, I could not help but sigh. My wife, Tabitha and baby were safe at home. I had sent her to the Central Hospital about a week ago to deliver our baby, much to Tabitha’s displeasure. She had complied, however, and had stayed in the hospital till she was delivered of her baby. I was happy to see them again. But that scar… I couldn’t bring myself to look at it yet. In fact, I couldn’t bring myself to look at Tabitha in the same way ever again. I felt so betrayed by that scar!             Prior to her pregnancy, Tabitha had been porcelain perfect: not even a hint of an injury could be seen on her body. She was perfect, and I had gloried in that perfection. She had all the curves to make other women green, a dazzling white smile to put the sun to shame, and a musical laughter which could clear the darkest clouds of depression. Tabitha was the perfect hourglass. I had always been proud to be seen in her company, and although she was the reserved sort,

SHORT STORY: CHANGE

“You and your baby are going home today, Tabitha. Aren’t we glad?” Dr. Tablus asked me cheerily.             Yes, I was. This was my first pregnancy and it had taught me a lot of interesting things, the last of which has changed my perspective about having children forever. I had a smooth pregnancy, I mean, no morning sickness, no loss of appetite, no crazy cravings, I had that pregnancy glow which made many people compliment me every time. I was strong; I could walk the distance and carry loads that were safe for pregnancy. I only went to the hospital when my antenatal visit was due. Everything was great until my due date came. And passed. And I had still not delivered.             I remember my midwife recommending a hospital stay until I had delivered, which I had been against. I mean, if my baby was ready to be born, my body would be set in motion, wouldn’t it? I had gone home to my husband who, to my utter shock, packed me out of our apartment and drove me straig

SHORT STORY: 'IT IS WHAT IT IS'

It was the day after the heavy rains. The sun seemed cheerful in the blue sky, the clouds – a scattering of white and grey columns – floated lazily across the sky. It was a lazy day; even the wind blew lazily. Marcus Smith brought out his plastic chair and went straight to the summer hut in the middle of his compound. It was one of those days when he could just sit and enjoy nature uninterrupted by work or some people’s drama. He sat in the chair, stretched, and smiled. It was a good day to be alive! His smile had not lived sixty seconds when he heard his phone ring. He sighed. Why had he not turned it off yet? He wished the person wouldn’t bother calling again as he didn’t answer. Rather unfortunately for him, the caller kept calling. Finally, without checking the caller ID, he answered, and almost immediately wished the phone would explode. “Why are you avoiding me, Marcus?” The unwelcome greeting sounded over the connection. “Good day to you too, Sonia,” Marcus replied, h

BLACKMAIL II - CHAPTER 4

If you missed any of the previous chapters of BlackMail II... BLACKMAIL II - CHAPTER 1 BLACKMAIL II - CHAPTER 2 BLACKMAIL II - CHAPTER 3 “WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER.”             Cathy sat on her bed, exhausted from her quarrel with her husband. How could he do that to her? She was lost. Zach wasn’t one to use subtle means to achieve his aim; he took a more direct route. Her thoughts niggled at her, which made her frown. It did not make sense to her at all. But they lived alone, and she certainly had not been using poster colours – she had not even seen them in a very long while until that morning. She could not fathom how those materials had gotten to their toolshed, except of course it was brought in by her loving husband, Zach to scare her into madness or death. That was the part too she couldn’t get: why would Zach want to kill her? Had he met someone new? Was she a hindrance to his amorous affair with the other woman? Or, was it just time for him to pay her back for cheating on

BLACKMAIL II - CHAPTER 1 BLACKMAIL II - CHAPTER 2                                                       MAKE OR BREAK?            Zach did not want to panic, but he could not help being afraid for his dear wife. What had happened to her? Had she screamed for help while he was revisiting the past? He quickly decided to search the perimeter of their residence. He easily and quietly crossed the backyard to the other side of the house where they had set up a small toolshed. That toolshed was where they kept all their manual and electronic tools. They had decided that neither of them wanted to trip over a stray nail gun or a bulky wheelbarrow.           As Zach crossed to the toolshed, he observed that the door was open. He inched closer slowly and took a peek. There, right in front of him, was a form he had never seen before. He charged into the shed and grabbed the arms of the stranger while kicking him behind the

BLACKMAIL II - CHAPTER 2

Did you miss BlackMail II - Chapter 1 ? REACTIONS              Cathy felt numb as she sat at the doorstep leading to their backyard garden. It had been five years! Five years of trying to put those horrid final moments behind her. Five years of doing her best to patch her relationship with her husband, Zach. And that was also difficult: I mean, how do you repair a relationship with a man on whom you cheated for over six months?             Zach appeared to be taking things in his stride. He had never once mentioned anything relating to her infidelity five years ago. That also added to her guilt. She couldn’t live with herself. Every night, she saw Dale – a very fiery and angry Dale. He came to her, calling her name in the softest of tones imaginable, inviting her for one more tryst. Every night, she drifted towards him, and every time, he set her ablaze with his touch. She would scream, begging him to let her go, set her free, but he would laugh, a laugh that sounded like th

BLACKMAIL II - CHAPTER 1

Hi there! This is the second phase of the BlackMail series. In case you missed the previous BlackMail series, catch up on: BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 1 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 2 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 3 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 4 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 5 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 6 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 7 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 8 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 9 BLACKMAIL CHAPTER 10 RUDE AWAKENING The blood-curdling scream at midnight got Zach jumping out of his comfortable bed and grabbing his gun before his brain registered that the scream had come from right beside him on his bed. He let out a puff of air, re-placed his gun and turned the bedside lamp on. He sat heavily and watched his wife thrash in the bed for some time. He contemplated rousing her from her nightmare but thought otherwise; the last time it had happened, he had received a hefty punch on his cheek. The area was still sore.             Zach called upon his military skills and went for his wife’s hands first. Fortunately for him, this time, his wife calmed. Something w

FOR WHAT WAS NOT

Google image Melissa stared at the image in her inbox. It was a wedding invitation: of David and a woman named Catherine. She was not surprised that he was getting married; far from that. She was, however, surprised that she felt hurt and betrayed. She could feel her heart ripping apart the longer she stared at the invitation card. She laughed mirthlessly at her own reaction: how could she feel betrayed? David was a flesh-and-blood man, she knew that. He had needs that must be met. What did she expect, that he would pine for her till the end of the world? Ha! Melissa tried to fathom why it hurt her to see that David had found someone else. It had been five years since they ended their relationship, or better, since she had called things off with him. She had even gone ahead to get married and have two healthy children with Morris. It was funny that she felt hurt and betrayed. Or, could it be that she had not gotten over David completely? Melissa shook her head at that thought
