PROFOUND FAITH

Image is AI-generated. Ever heard the expression, “Take a leap of faith”? It is what many people say or are told when they are about to undertake a risky venture. Faith is a strong conviction of possible events which will align in our favour and we earnestly look forward to that expected end.           Religious people hold Faith in very high esteem: it is their guiding light in this dark and dreary world. Faith is the cool hand that holds ours when we are at a crossroads. Faith is that still, small, and usually gently urging voice that spurs us on when we are at the end of our proverbial rope. When we overcome eventually, some attribution goes to faith and grace. Even unbelievers have faith, just not in a power higher than themselves. Their faith is in their abilities and they usually attribute their success or failure to luck.           In our world today, where physical situations like the economy and poor choi...

THE END OF THE ROPE

Most of the time, Christians remember they have a powerful God when they have tried all that they could without results. To such Christians, God is the last option. To them, God wants them to try all that is humanly possible and fail woefully then He would finally come through as their knight in shining armour to rescue them. By the time these Christians find their way to God, they are so battered and embittered that they do not expect much from God: their perception usually is, “If God will do it, let Him. If He doesn’t, I don’t care. I have suffered enough as it is.” Other times, they question the power of the all-powerful God and lose faith. If they happen to succeed in whatever venture they are pursuing, they think of themselves as self-sufficient and not needing any God at all. Where was that God when they were starting to try and kept on failing miserably?        In this generation, it has become more difficult to see and believe in God because...

SEVENTY-SEVEN TIMES SEVEN

The greatest and most painful betrayals come from people very close to us, and it hurts so because those are the people we least expect betrayal from. It also becomes very difficult to forgive such persons. Ironically, especially because of their closeness to us, we should rather find it easier to forgive them, but forgiveness doesn’t come so easily.           One of those who will offend in very unexpected ways is a spouse. Because of their proximity, spouses can offend and take offense very easily. In such cases, it is easier said to forgive and forget than actually forgiving and forgetting. Their constant presence in the space we share with them makes things harder as their very breath is a reminder of the offense; there is even no cooling break!           Depending on the weight of the offense, if the couple feels that they can no longer bear being in the same space with...

PARENTING: HAVE WE ROMANTICISED IT?

Before I had a child, I used to think of how blessed a couple were to have children, how fun it must be to have children, and how exciting I was going to make my own parenthood. I could daydream about how we would spend time playing games and having fun, just like I saw in pictures and movies. Forget about the nastier scenes of tantrums; my children were going to be of good behaviour naturally. Oh, the sweet summer child I was. After having mine, I have come to realise – as many other parents have confirmed – that parenting is not as easy as it has been made to appear on TV and social media. Parenting is more than just goofing around with the child. There’s a whole phase that no one ever talks about. Everyone focuses on the positives: children are blessings, children are cute, children are funny and add colour to life. Is it wrong to highlight the positives of childbearing? No, it’s not. However, pause in your romantic daydreaming of having and raising children and consider...

THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THE SHEETS

Love-making is wonderful! It is one of the most amazing experiences in life. People make love (or as we love to say bluntly, have s*x) for many reasons: to consummate their relationship, to make babies, or just for the fun of it. Love-making is seen as a sacred act in our society. It is believed to have spiritual implications hence it is not to be taken for granted. In the typical Ghanaian society, a youth is not expected to have any form of sexual relations until they are married. Those who are caught flaunting this are often shunned and labeled as social misfits. The major reason for the preaching of abstinence from s*x until marriage is to prevent wrong mixing of souls: it is widely believed that soul/spiritual ties are formed when a couple have s*x, and these ties go a long way to affect our lives and destinies. But, what if there is a chemical reason for that soul-tie feeling? One important organ involved in sexual intercourse is the brain. The brain sends and receives s...

THE POND THAT NEVER RUNS DRY.

Sesemi Pond  Water is a valuable resource for man. This is emphasized in nature as water holds a large percentage of the Earth’s surface. Man cannot do without water, and as a result, a lot of settlers made sure that they found a good source of water before they made settlement. The scenario is not different from the Danish slavers who arrived in Ghana in the 19 th century and set up a plantation at a place in Accra known as Djabing in the Abokobi area. The slavers and their slaves found a pond not far from their settlement at the plantation, and that pond served the inhabitants with water. Miraculously, the said pond is still there at Sesemi. The pond at Sesemi is surrounded with many stories. There is no clear history concerning how it came to be: some say it was dug by Okomfo Anokye; others say it came all by itself. Healing Pond The Sesemi pond seems muddy and unsafe for consumption but it is said to possess healing qualities. According to the guide there, Mr...

A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE

When Douglas committed his first grave sin the day before Sunday, he was afraid to go home. He dreaded going to church the next day because he feared his prophet friends and the minister in charge would find him out and speak about it. He moved with caution when he went to church, doing his best to avoid his very spiritual friends. But in a small congregation like theirs, there was no hiding place: they all found him, and they had a very smooth and safe conversation – nothing out of the ordinary was mentioned, and nothing about his activities were hinted at in the conversation. When they parted ways, he heaved a sigh of relief. The next time he sinned, he was more confident than the first time. Again, he went to church expecting that his spiritual friends would comment about it or even try to advise him about the course his life was taking. Again, there was nothing. They treated him just as they always have – as a sweet brother in the Lord. He asked himself, “Are they really ...

MUSING - WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE DIE? (A PHYSICAL PERSPECTIVE)

What happens after a person dies? It is a mystery because no one who ever died gave a vivid account of the after-death. People who claimed to have seen God and the devil when they “resurrected” were said to have been hallucinating and were never dead in the first place. Those who were believed to have actually died never came back to tell any stories – Mohammed, Buddha, Theresa, even Jesus. The question still lingers: what is death like?      The living man is made of three components – the body, the soul, and the spirit. The body is what everyone sees, the matter which exists on the earth and moves about. The soul and the spirit, however, cannot be seen or touched. They are expressed through the body. The soul is the intellect, the will, and the emotions of a person. The spirit is the element that sustains the person (let’s not get spiritual).      When a man dies, his spirit is separated from the body. His soul dies with ...

Article - The DNA of Love

THE DNA OF LOVE Every relationship begins with love. Every relationship is sustained by love. Everything good or bad done has love in it. Even the worst kind of hate has a root of love that went wrong. Love is a package of feelings and actions towards an object of attraction. We want to keep our love affair going for as long as possible but sadly, that does not happen for some of us. Love seems to die off and we wonder why we found our partners attractive in the first place. In this piece, we are going to meet the components of love that make every relationship work and last. To start with, love does not die. Anyone who has ever loved truly can attest to this. There might be a reason why the pair cannot be together but deep down, the love is still there. How is that possible? Before anyone can confidently say they are in love, or they love someone, whatever emotion it is should have these three elements: passion, intimacy, and then commitment. Let’s discuss them. PASSION ...

STUDIO ONE PHOTOGRAPHY

Once upon a time, a good friend of mine organized a splendid birthday party for her tight circle of friends. Being an introvert, I was not too excited about attending but out of curiosity I found myself there. I noticed a gentleman with a digital camera, flashing all around the place. Three days after the party, I visited my friend. In the course of our conversation, I asked about the pictures from the party; I wanted to see what shots the photographer got of me. When she brought the pictures, I wished I hadn't asked her! The photos were the most terrible of its kind! All the persons in the photos were tilted left or right, the images were skewed toward left or right, there seemed to be no co-ordination at all in the photos, as if the  camera was wielded by a mere child. I then asked my friend who did that shoddy job n she told me; she added the huge amount she paid too. I was disappointed! Credit: Studio One The above could happen to any one of us. We want to keep photo...

MOVING ON

Every two people who enter into a relationship have their expectations of the relationship. Some expect their relationship to continue into marriage. Some know that their relationship will not go farther than their beds. Whatever it is, an end is not perceived, especially if all is going well. Therefore, when a relationship has to end, the first impact is sudden before the acceptance come later. People who expected more from their relationship are those who suffer the most when it ends. Sometimes, it takes an end to make a person appreciate what they had or what they really need from a life partner. These are four suggestions concerning what to do after the heart has suffered a break. Do not hate. This will be very hard especially if you are on the receiving end of the breakup. You are likely to feel used and stupid because you did not see it coming. It’s all good. Let the feelings come and let those feelings pass. Hating your partner and/or yourself will not bring your partn...
