FOR WHAT WAS NOT

Google image

Melissa stared at the image in her inbox. It was a wedding invitation: of David and a woman named Catherine. She was not surprised that he was getting married; far from that. She was, however, surprised that she felt hurt and betrayed. She could feel her heart ripping apart the longer she stared at the invitation card. She laughed mirthlessly at her own reaction: how could she feel betrayed? David was a flesh-and-blood man, she knew that. He had needs that must be met. What did she expect, that he would pine for her till the end of the world? Ha!

Melissa tried to fathom why it hurt her to see that David had found someone else. It had been five years since they ended their relationship, or better, since she had called things off with him. She had even gone ahead to get married and have two healthy children with Morris. It was funny that she felt hurt and betrayed. Or, could it be that she had not gotten over David completely? Melissa shook her head at that thought.

She went over the main reason she had decided to end things with David: he had been verbally abusive. Sometimes, he would apologize to her for his utterances. Other times which were more often, he would find excuses for the horrible things he said. She had always told him that she felt disrespected by his behavior. His usual response had been: ‘Whores need no respect.’ He would then laugh and apologize again for saying that. For how long could she have lived with such verbal abuses when – or if – they had continued their relationship? Had he changed for the better? Or was he still using those words? Or, was she the only person whom he had decided did not need his respect? Melissa could not bear to think of such things. They were beginning to give her a migraine. She was surely better off without him.

She thought of her sweet Morris, who at the moment had gone to the market to get supplies for the family. Morris had been nothing but kind and generous towards her. He had never used any abusive word since they met, and he was always willing to hear her opinion on matters even unrelated to her and her field of work. He had shown, and still shows, commitment and dedication towards her and their children. He was everything she ever hoped to have in a husband. What more did she want?

She smiled and rubbed her seven-month-old bump. Surely, she had made the right choice in this matter. She looked at the invitation again and smiled sadly. Perhaps, a part of her would always love David, perhaps she might never be able to completely get over him. But she would never let go of the blessing she found in Morris. That is all that matters now, isn’t it?

THE UNSUNG HERO: JOSEPH, FATHER OF JESUS

Leadership is often thought of in terms of grand titles and public achievements. But the most challenging leadership role might just be within the walls of our homes. Fathers, after all, are raising the next generation. Their choices have a ripple effect, impacting not just their families but society as a whole. Father's Day is here (June 16th, 2024). Let's consider a father from the scriptures who faced a unique challenge: Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ. Imagine being engaged to marry someone you love, only to discover they're pregnant before your wedding. This was Joseph's reality. An honorable man, he initially planned to leave Mary quietly to avoid scandal. However, through divine guidance, he was called to stay and raise the child Mary was carrying. Joseph's situation was far from ordinary in those days. He would be raising a child not his own. This could lead to misunderstandings – his corrections might be seen as confrontations, and his role...

SHORT STORY: CHANGE

“You and your baby are going home today, Tabitha. Aren’t we glad?” Dr. Tablus asked me cheerily.             Yes, I was. This was my first pregnancy and it had taught me a lot of interesting things, the last of which has changed my perspective about having children forever. I had a smooth pregnancy, I mean, no morning sickness, no loss of appetite, no crazy cravings, I had that pregnancy glow which made many people compliment me every time. I was strong; I could walk the distance and carry loads that were safe for pregnancy. I only went to the hospital when my antenatal visit was due. Everything was great until my due date came. And passed. And I had still not delivered.             I remember my midwife recommending a hospital stay until I had delivered, which I had been against. I mean, if my baby was rea...

MARRIED TO ONE - PART THREE

SEVERAL DAYS LATER... Read  Part Two Everything had been going well between Dorothy and Duncan since their first fight. Dorothy was warming up to her place in Duncan’s life and she was loving it. First, he consulted her on whether they should rent a bigger three-bedroom apartment or remain in their small one-bedroom apartment and save towards their own. Then, he would return early from work and do some of the domestic chores. The other day, Duncan gave their bathroom a good scrub because Dorothy had been swamped with work. She was grateful to him and she felt she couldn’t love him any less than she did now.           Duncan, on the other hand, was not a very happy man. He loved his wife very much and he did not want to cheat on her. But he wasn’t happy with the downturn of their lovemaking. He was grateful to her for ensuring that they had a meal every evening and keeping their cozy apartment clean most of the time (Duncan didn’t m...
