SHORT STORY - CHRISTMAS PRESENT

Yvette had sat up the entire night of 24 th December, expecting her best friend, Marion to show up and take them to the street carnival in town. She was still sitting up on 25 th December, still hopeful, waiting for him to call her and apologize for standing – or, in her case sitting – her up the whole night and part of the next day. It was 2pm but there was no sign of Marion: no call missed; no text message; and he was last seen on WhatsApp at 2:35pm on 24 th . Yvette did not want to worry too much about it, believing that Marion was playing a prank on her. She therefore went into her bedroom and took off her dazzling dress which she had intended to sweep Marion off his feet for the first time. Yvette and Marion had been friends for six years this year, and they had planned to celebrate their friendship anniversary in a grand style at the street carnival, where they had literally run into each other six years ago. Yvette had been fifteen years then, and had just entered S

THE POND THAT NEVER RUNS DRY.

Sesemi Pond  Water is a valuable resource for man. This is emphasized in nature as water holds a large percentage of the Earth’s surface. Man cannot do without water, and as a result, a lot of settlers made sure that they found a good source of water before they made settlement. The scenario is not different from the Danish slavers who arrived in Ghana in the 19 th century and set up a plantation at a place in Accra known as Djabing in the Abokobi area. The slavers and their slaves found a pond not far from their settlement at the plantation, and that pond served the inhabitants with water. Miraculously, the said pond is still there at Sesemi. The pond at Sesemi is surrounded with many stories. There is no clear history concerning how it came to be: some say it was dug by Okomfo Anokye; others say it came all by itself. Healing Pond The Sesemi pond seems muddy and unsafe for consumption but it is said to possess healing qualities. According to the guide there, Mr. Pa

SHORT STORY: FOR WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN

David and Melissa sat facing each other that bright afternoon at Pizza Hut. If only their mood was as bright as the weather… if only Melissa had been bolder… if only David had been more encouraging… if only there were not so many “if only’s”. David sighed loudly and he got curious stares from the other customers at Pizza Hut. He did not care about anyone at that moment; he was more concerned about the loss of his lover to another man. At the thought of the other man (whoever he was), David’s brow creased in a frown which lasted merely a moment – he did not want Melissa to see how much he was affected by her news. “You didn’t want what I had to offer, Dave”, Melissa said quietly. “And I wanted more than you were willing to give.” “But you had me. What more was there to give you? I could have provided if you had just opened up to me! I wanted you...” “You didn’t. Well, not as I wanted to be wanted. You just wanted your flesh to be satisfied…” “Are you saying that y

A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE

When Douglas committed his first grave sin the day before Sunday, he was afraid to go home. He dreaded going to church the next day because he feared his prophet friends and the minister in charge would find him out and speak about it. He moved with caution when he went to church, doing his best to avoid his very spiritual friends. But in a small congregation like theirs, there was no hiding place: they all found him, and they had a very smooth and safe conversation – nothing out of the ordinary was mentioned, and nothing about his activities were hinted at in the conversation. When they parted ways, he heaved a sigh of relief. The next time he sinned, he was more confident than the first time. Again, he went to church expecting that his spiritual friends would comment about it or even try to advise him about the course his life was taking. Again, there was nothing. They treated him just as they always have – as a sweet brother in the Lord. He asked himself, “Are they really

MUSING - WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE DIE? (A PHYSICAL PERSPECTIVE)

What happens after a person dies? It is a mystery because no one who ever died gave a vivid account of the after-death. People who claimed to have seen God and the devil when they “resurrected” were said to have been hallucinating and were never dead in the first place. Those who were believed to have actually died never came back to tell any stories – Mohammed, Buddha, Theresa, even Jesus. The question still lingers: what is death like?      The living man is made of three components – the body, the soul, and the spirit. The body is what everyone sees, the matter which exists on the earth and moves about. The soul and the spirit, however, cannot be seen or touched. They are expressed through the body. The soul is the intellect, the will, and the emotions of a person. The spirit is the element that sustains the person (let’s not get spiritual).      When a man dies, his spirit is separated from the body. His soul dies with him. As there is no life, the body becomes lifele

BlackMail Series - Chapter Ten

THE SHOWDOWN Cathy and Zach fell asleep on the couch – they had exhausted themselves with strategies on how to talk Dale out of taking the money from Cathy and also making sure Dale does not kill them both out of his jealousy and hatred. Zach could not bring himself to think how a man who cared for and about his wife manage to travel from sweet to villain in such a short space of time. Cathy had been through too much, he figured. His return was too sudden: perhaps, perhaps he should have attempted a short coded message to her during his absence; perhaps he should have informed her before he returned…  As they lay in the couch, Zach stroked his wife’s hair. God, he thought, he was blessed with such a woman. In spite of her short falls (which she could not be blamed entirely – he would have done the same, maybe worse, had the matter been reversed), she was willing to make amends and keep their marriage still alive. He valued her then – she was priceless. As Cathy lay in her husb

BlackMail Series - Chapter Nine

MOMENT OF TRUTH “Say something, Cathy.” Zach implored. “Will you believe me above all that you have already heard?” Cathy asked, not sure of what Zach wanted – if he wanted more to condemn her, or if he was ready to really listen to her side of the story. “I’m willing to listen to yours, Cathy. I want to hear your side. Tell me.” Cathy sighed. “I thought you were dead, Zach. I was miserable. I was torn. I was broken. Everything did not make sense after they told me that you had died; it was worse after you had been supposedly buried without my knowledge. I hadn’t got to say goodbye to you. My heart was wrenched from within. Can you imagine the loss I felt? I had to go through all that alone. Alone, Zach, for six solid months!” Cathy sobbed. Zach bent his head. He could not bear the pain that was expressed in Cathy’s words and eyes. “I began spending some time at the beach.” Cathy sniffed. She paused for a while before continuing. “Dale and I met there at the beac

BlackMail Series - Chapter Eight

“TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED…” “Well?” Zach pushed. “What is this about? What have you been up to? Speak for goodness sake!!!” Cathy looked as if she would crumble into rubble where she stood: her face was pale – she seemed about to give in. But she threw her head back in defiance and looked straight at her husband. “There’s nothing to tell you, Zach.” “Oh really? There’s nothing to tell? There sure is a hell of a lot out there, darling wife. There’s a lot about you and your amorous affair in my absence. What? Is he the one sending you the mail?” “I have nothing to tell you. And I can handle this on my own!” Cathy threw the words at Zach and started to walk out. As she passed by him, he grabbed her arm and whispered, “If you walk out of this door, we are done!” “Watch me, Zach,” she replied in the same tone, and yanked her arm from his grip. She walked out of the room, out of the house and got into a taxi before she broke down in tears completely. Her marriage was crumbl

BlackMail Series - Chapter Seven

IN SEARCH FOR ANSWERS “What happened to you, Dale? You were such a kind and wonderful man to me…” Cathy said with tears in her eyes. Her heart was breaking as she looked at the man who once held her heart and love for her in his eyes. She wondered why fate had played with them so. She wished she could undo time and wait for her husband… Her husband! Of course. He was the cause of this mess. He should have told her of his mission, no matter how dangerous it was. At least she would have had the patience to wait for his return. Oh what a mess… she began sobbing. “Cathy… Cathy…” Cathy heard her name in a distance, but she felt too weak to respond. She felt a calloused hand wipe her tears, and she opened her eyes to see her husband looking down at her with worry. He dropped a light kiss on her cheek and smiled. Zach waited for Cathy to fully wake up before helping her out of bed and into the filled bathtub. He eased her into it and began massaging her. He could not ask her abou

BlackMail Series - Chapter Six

“LET’S MAKE UP” Zach was actually not asleep when Cathy returned. He had been waiting for her and only pretended to be sleeping in order to give her some space. He had heard all her movements, and he had deliberately put his arm around her and whispered that he loved her. What he did not understand was why she cried her heart out till she fell asleep. What had happened to her while she was out? What had happened while he was away? Why was she not wearing her ring still? Did any of it have to do with the supposed friend called Dale? If thinking alone could produce answers, Zach was sure he would have had his fill of them already. He watched over his beloved wife for some time before spooning himself behind her and he also fell into a worried sleep. Before long, it was daybreak. When Zach awoke, Cathy was not in bed with him. He looked long at her part of the bed as if that would make her appear there. He wanted to hold his wife, kiss her, do a lot of wicked things to her but he

Article - The DNA of Love

THE DNA OF LOVE Every relationship begins with love. Every relationship is sustained by love. Everything good or bad done has love in it. Even the worst kind of hate has a root of love that went wrong. Love is a package of feelings and actions towards an object of attraction. We want to keep our love affair going for as long as possible but sadly, that does not happen for some of us. Love seems to die off and we wonder why we found our partners attractive in the first place. In this piece, we are going to meet the components of love that make every relationship work and last. To start with, love does not die. Anyone who has ever loved truly can attest to this. There might be a reason why the pair cannot be together but deep down, the love is still there. How is that possible? Before anyone can confidently say they are in love, or they love someone, whatever emotion it is should have these three elements: passion, intimacy, and then commitment. Let’s discuss them. PASSION

BlackMail Series - Chapter Five

BLACKMAIL I True to Cathy’s thinking, Zach was standing at the window, watching the street and awaiting her return. Recalling what had happened earlier, he advised himself not to ask her any questions. But he was itching for answers! He watched her pay the fare, step out of the taxi, adjust her clothes, and walk nonchalantly into the house. He responded to her greeting coolly. She entered the bedroom without saying anything else. He left his post at the window and went to the kitchen to prepare a meal for both of them. She still did not say anything to him after he had finished and invited her to the meal. Cathy was comfortable with the silence as Zach could not push about the missing ring and who the other man was. She would have to tell him, eventually, but she was afraid of the result. If the boyfriend had not gone well, so much worse can happen with the husband. For now, she gloried in the silence, using it as a weapon and biding her time. Their new routine of silence

BlackMail Series - Chapter Four

CONFESSION II Cathy’s breath caught in her throat, lost for words. She looked at her husband, who was also looking at her, expecting an answer. When none came, he repeated, “Where is your wedding ring, Cathy?” She should say something, she thought. She just did not know what to say. She fumbled, “I… it… oh Zach, I have misplaced it!” she finally said, throwing her hands up. “Where did you misplace it?” Silly question, she thought, and it must have shown because Zach frowned. “Zach, if I knew where I misplaced it, I would have found it before you realized”, she said sarcastically and walked away from him. Zach was stupefied: this was the first time in their four-year marriage that Cathy had been downright rude to him. What happened to his lovely humble wife, he wondered, shaking his head. That little story of Dale or whoever he is being ‘just a friend’ was too lame for him to believe. He would find out who he was by all means. Maybe he should befriend those unfr
