MUSING - WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE DIE? (A PHYSICAL PERSPECTIVE)

What happens after a person dies? It is a mystery because no one who ever died gave a vivid account of the after-death. People who claimed to have seen God and the devil when they “resurrected” were said to have been hallucinating and were never dead in the first place. Those who were believed to have actually died never came back to tell any stories – Mohammed, Buddha, Theresa, even Jesus. The question still lingers: what is death like?

The living man is made of three components – the body, the soul, and the spirit. The body is what everyone sees, the matter which exists on the earth and moves about. The soul and the spirit, however, cannot be seen or touched. They are expressed through the body. The soul is the intellect, the will, and the emotions of a person. The spirit is the element that sustains the person (let’s not get spiritual).

When a man dies, his spirit is separated from the body. His soul dies with him. As there is no life, the body becomes lifeless. So, what happens at this point? Nothing. The body would be buried and a merry funeral would be held in honour of the dead. Death is a long dreamless sleep from which one cannot be awakened by any alarm. The person is no longer part of the life and existence on earth. Life goes on, but without the dead. The living remember all the things they have to do without them and they weep, but the dead do not hear them. They are already in that dreamless state where nothing from Earth gets to them no matter how loudly their names are screamed. There is no waking up. When a person dies, they are dead, gone forever into nothing. The dead cannot see anything, and they do not affect the living in any way.

So what happens after we die? Simple: nothing. We are just no longer part of the living world.

SHORT STORY - TURN OVER

Maureen’s hope of getting married and having children with Raymond was dashed the night that Raymond announced that he was going to spend the night and several other nights with his wife. The information did not register immediately, and she made jests of waiting for him till he got back. Then the reality of the matter hit her: he was not going to come back to her; he was married, and she could no longer have him all to herself, not even part of him. Oh no! What was she going to do? Maureen and Raymond had been in a serious relationship for the past three years. She moved in with him eighteen months ago and had had the best of a sexual affair. Surely she could not have known that he was married, could she? He did not wear any ring, neither did he go anywhere apart from work. He spent all his time with her. How could she have known?! Raymond did not bat any of his lustrous eyelashes when he told Maureen. He showed no remorse at all. What did he have to lose? He had a very good ...
