THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY!

Everyone loves Friday! Friday is the only day among the week that promises freedom from bosses and clients/customers, much needed rest, and some time to make up for lost time with friends and family. We welcome Friday with this popular abbreviation: TGIF! Where did this come from? What does it mean?

Origin of “Thank God It’s Friday”
History cannot agree on the exact time that TGIF began to be used. However, according to the Encyclopedia of Slang, the expression “Thank God It’s Friday” appeared in print in 1941. Over time, people used the expression to show their joy at the approach of the weekend. People say “TGIF” or “Thank God It’s Friday” or “Thank goodness it’s Friday”.

Is It “Thank God It’s Friday” or “Thank God Is Friday”?
People on social media platforms celebrate the advent of the weekend with pictures and texts that express their joy of break from the hard week and the opportunity to relax before the onslaught of another work week. Unfortunately, some of these people express their joy by writing “Thank God Is Friday”, which raises the grammatical question: where is the subject here? Is there a God called ‘Thank’? Or, is ‘Thank God’ called ‘Friday’?

The correct expression is either “Thank God It Is Friday” (also written as “Thank God It’s Friday) or “Thank Goodness It’s Friday”, both abbreviated as TGIF. “Thank God Is Friday” is grammatical suicide.

THE UNSUNG HERO: JOSEPH, FATHER OF JESUS

Leadership is often thought of in terms of grand titles and public achievements. But the most challenging leadership role might just be within the walls of our homes. Fathers, after all, are raising the next generation. Their choices have a ripple effect, impacting not just their families but society as a whole. Father's Day is here (June 16th, 2024). Let's consider a father from the scriptures who faced a unique challenge: Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ. Imagine being engaged to marry someone you love, only to discover they're pregnant before your wedding. This was Joseph's reality. An honorable man, he initially planned to leave Mary quietly to avoid scandal. However, through divine guidance, he was called to stay and raise the child Mary was carrying. Joseph's situation was far from ordinary in those days. He would be raising a child not his own. This could lead to misunderstandings – his corrections might be seen as confrontations, and his role...

MUSING - WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE DIE? (A PHYSICAL PERSPECTIVE)

What happens after a person dies? It is a mystery because no one who ever died gave a vivid account of the after-death. People who claimed to have seen God and the devil when they “resurrected” were said to have been hallucinating and were never dead in the first place. Those who were believed to have actually died never came back to tell any stories – Mohammed, Buddha, Theresa, even Jesus. The question still lingers: what is death like?      The living man is made of three components – the body, the soul, and the spirit. The body is what everyone sees, the matter which exists on the earth and moves about. The soul and the spirit, however, cannot be seen or touched. They are expressed through the body. The soul is the intellect, the will, and the emotions of a person. The spirit is the element that sustains the person (let’s not get spiritual).      When a man dies, his spirit is separated from the body. His soul dies with ...

MARRIED TO ONE - PART THREE

SEVERAL DAYS LATER... Read  Part Two Everything had been going well between Dorothy and Duncan since their first fight. Dorothy was warming up to her place in Duncan’s life and she was loving it. First, he consulted her on whether they should rent a bigger three-bedroom apartment or remain in their small one-bedroom apartment and save towards their own. Then, he would return early from work and do some of the domestic chores. The other day, Duncan gave their bathroom a good scrub because Dorothy had been swamped with work. She was grateful to him and she felt she couldn’t love him any less than she did now.           Duncan, on the other hand, was not a very happy man. He loved his wife very much and he did not want to cheat on her. But he wasn’t happy with the downturn of their lovemaking. He was grateful to her for ensuring that they had a meal every evening and keeping their cozy apartment clean most of the time (Duncan didn’t m...
